Common Questions
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a powerful, proven method of helping people change the way they feel and manage their lives. It is the practice of talking things through with a skilled and trusted professional who can help clients make positive changes in their lives. It is a healing method based upon both the science of psychology and the skills of understanding, teaching, supporting and confronting.
Is psychotherapy confidential?
Psychotherapy is confidential and private. No information about therapy sessions can be released to anyone without written client permission.
There are legal exceptions to confidentiality when someone is a danger to themselves or others and when there is evidence of the physical or sexual abuse of children.
What can I expect in a therapy session?
During our sessions we’ll talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. A session typically lasts 50 minutes, but some people request longer sessions.
Effective psychotherapy moves at your individual pace and is more effective on a weekly basis. You and I will decide together the frequency of our sessions. Between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records. For therapy to “work,” you must be an active participant, both in and outside of the therapy sessions.
